waveform

Home / glossary / waveform

In electronics, a waveform is the shape and form of a signal such as voltage or current as it varies over time. Waveforms can be periodic, such as a sine wave, or aperiodic, such as a square wave. The study of waveforms is called signal analysis.Waveforms are important in the fields of telecommunications, radar and sonar, where they are used to carry information. In these applications, the term waveform can refer to the signal that is being transmitted, or to the signal that is being received.Waveforms can be generated by electronic circuits, by mechanical means (such as rotating machinery), or by natural phenomena (such as thunder). They can also be recorded on storage media such as magnetic tape or disk.
