Solar Street Lights Built for Australian Conditions

Green Frog Systems designs and engineers commercial solar street lighting for Australian roads and public infrastructure. Each system is designed around the project: the lighting standard it needs to meet, the site’s location and solar availability, its operating hours and site conditions.

From local roads and residential developments to remote infrastructure, our off-grid systems deliver compliant lighting without underground cabling or a mains connection.

How Solar Street Lights Work

Each light runs as its own small power system, independent of the grid.

Generate

Solar Panel

A photovoltaic panel converts sunlight into electricity during the day, with the array sized to the site’s location and the shortest days of the year.

Store

Onboard Battery

Energy is stored in an onboard battery, with capacity selected so the light keeps running through periods of reduced solar generation.

Light

LED Luminaire

After dark, the LED luminaire runs to a programmed lighting profile, switching on at dusk and off at dawn or as the project requires.

Solar Compared with Mains-Powered Street Lighting

For roads and sites without existing power, solar avoids the biggest costs of mains lighting. Here’s how the two compare.

Feature Solar street lighting Mains-powered street lighting
No trenching or underground cabling ✓ ✕
No mains connection needed ✓ ✕
No ongoing electricity bills ✓ ✕
Unaffected by grid outages ✓ ✕
Suits new or remote sites without power ✓ ✕
Lighting designed to AS/NZS 1158 ✓ ✓
Very high output over long periods Site dependent ✓
Lower upfront cost Site dependent Site dependent

The right choice depends on the lighting category, how far the site is from existing power and how the road is used. On major roads with power already nearby, mains lighting can still make sense, and our team will tell you if that’s the case.

Australian engineering and project support

Engineered for Each Site, Supported Through Delivery

Our systems are typically designed for five or more nights of autonomy, with solar generation and battery storage sized to the site’s geographic location, lighting requirements and operating profile.

Green Frog Systems supplies commercial solar street lighting across Australia, supporting projects from initial design and specification through to delivery. We work with engineers, contractors and infrastructure owners to assess site requirements, select the right systems and provide the technical documentation needed for planning and installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can solar street lights meet Australian lighting standards?

Yes. Green Frog systems are designed to the AS/NZS 1158 lighting category each project requires, with a photometric design that matches the lighting layout to the site. The GFS-400, Aspire 500 and Aspire 600 are designed for Category V roads.

How many nights can solar street lights operate without sunlight?

Our systems are typically designed for five or more nights of autonomy, with solar generation and battery storage sized to the site’s geographic location, lighting requirements and operating profile. Figures vary by model and location, so see each product page for details.

Are solar street lights suitable for roads and intersections?

Yes, with the right model. The GFS-400, Aspire 500 and Aspire 600 are designed for Category V lighting on roads and intersections, while the GFS-200 and Aspire 300 suit local streets, residential roads and car parks. Each project is designed to the category the site needs.

What maintenance do commercial solar street lights require?

Very little. We recommend a quarterly visual check: inspecting the pole, light fitting and solar panel for damage, dirt or bird fouling, looking for shading from overgrown foliage, and confirming the light switches on and off as programmed. Panels sit on an angle, so rain usually keeps them clean, but in marine environments a regular fresh water rinse helps prevent salt build-up and corrosion.

Are solar street lights cheaper than mains-powered street lighting?

It depends on the site. Where a road has no existing power, solar usually avoids the biggest costs of mains lighting: trenching, underground cabling, a mains connection and ongoing electricity bills. Where power already runs along the road, mains lighting can be cheaper upfront. Our team can compare both for your project.

Does Green Frog Systems supply solar street lighting across Australia?

Yes. We supply commercial solar street lighting across Australia, with projects from regional South Australia to the Northern Territory, and support each project from design and specification through to delivery.
