diode

Home / glossary / diode

A diode is a device that allows current to flow in one direction only. It consists of two electrodes, called the anode and cathode, which are made from different materials. When current flows through a diode, it creates an electric field that allows electrons to flow from the cathode to the anode. However, when current tries to flow in the reverse direction, the electric field blocks it. This property makes diodes useful for rectifying alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC).
