Background
The Town of Gawler sought to improve evening access and safety at the Britton Street basketball court by providing controlled night-time lighting for young people using the space after school and work hours.
Located within a residential area, the court required lighting that would support evening activity without operating late into the night. The objective was to create a well-lit, welcoming space for a defined period, then automatically switch off—clearly signalling the end of use while avoiding unnecessary light spill into nearby homes.
Project Overview
The lighting needed to illuminate the court for a set three-hour evening window, operate autonomously, and avoid the cost and disruption of trenching or grid connection.
Challenges
-
Providing clear, even court lighting during peak evening use.
-
Ensuring lighting switched off automatically to suit a residential setting.
-
Minimising ongoing costs and maintenance for council.
Solution
Green Frog Systems supplied Defender solar area lights, configured specifically to operate at 20W for three hours, before switching off automatically each night.
This defined lighting profile supported safe evening use of the court while reinforcing appropriate time-based access for young users. The fully solar approach removed the need for underground cabling or ongoing power supply.
Products Used
Results
-
Improved evening visibility and safer access to the basketball court.
-
Clear time-based operation that supports responsible use in a residential area.
-
No power costs and no trenching or cabling required.
-
A low-intervention lighting solution aligned with council expectations.
Conclusion
The Britton Street basketball court upgrade demonstrates how carefully configured solar lighting can support community access without over-lighting or ongoing operational burden. By matching lighting output and run-time to actual use, the project delivered a practical, well-balanced outcome for both young people and surrounding residents.
