Every NOMAD is built on the same idea: site lighting should be an asset you move with the job, not infrastructure you pour into the ground or a diesel machine you feed every week. Each tower sits on a hot-dip galvanised steel base that is forklifted into position and ballasted on site with locally sourced fill — sand, aggregate, even iron ore on mine sites — to an engineered schedule. Panels, lights, batteries and controllers are installed, aimed and serviced at ground level. When the job moves, the ballast is emptied and returned as clean fill, the mast comes down, and the tower ships to the next job on an ordinary freight carrier — because the ballast never travels, freight stays cheap. Nothing is left behind.

Why teams are replacing diesel towers, trailers and poles with NOMAD

1 — No diesel, no fuel runs, no noise

A diesel lighting tower needs fuel deliveries, engine servicing, oil, filters and an SDS folder — and it drones all night next to the crew and the neighbours. NOMAD runs on sunlight with zero fuel, zero refuelling contractors, zero emissions and zero noise. The KX1000 smart controller (NOMAD 2 and 4) automatically scales power in extended overcast so the light is never dark at sunrise.

2 — No concrete, no civil works

Ballast is locally sourced fill — clean dry sand, aggregate, or whatever the site has in abundance — filled to a marked level under an engineered, published ballast schedule. No concrete footings means no excavation permits, no cure time, and no reinstatement obligations when the site closes. NOMAD 1 and NOMAD 2 are placed with the machines already on site — forklift, telehandler or any loader with forks — no crane at any point. NOMAD 4’s base is forked into place the same way; erecting its 11.5 m pole requires a crane or lifting device, once, at installation.

3 — Compliant, wind-rated, specified — not improvised

Temporary lighting still has to be right: an unrated tower that topples in a squall damages plant, injures people and lands on your incident register. Every NOMAD is designed to AS/NZS 1170.2 — location dependent, meeting wind regions A–C on sand ballast and customisable to meet region D — with an engineered ballast schedule supplied with each unit and certification documentation per job site. The lighting itself is designed to the AS/NZS 1158 series, from Category P general illumination (NOMAD 1 and 2) to full Category P and V road lighting, categories 1–5 (NOMAD 4), with site entry points, gatehouses and storage yards lit to AS/NZS 1680.5 outdoor workplace lighting. Specifying rated, compliant equipment designed to the wind conditions of your location is how you minimise damage, downtime and liability.

4 — Ground-level everything

The hand-winch telescopic mast brings the head to ground level on NOMAD 1 and 2: installation, aiming, cleaning, upgrades and servicing with no elevated work platform, no working-at-heights permits, no tilt zone. That is a line item saved on every service visit for the life of the asset.

5 — An asset, not infrastructure

Fixed poles are written off into the ground. Hired diesel towers are a cost that never ends. NOMAD is a capital asset that moves to the next job — and because the ballast is emptied before shipping, it moves on ordinary local freight carriers at ordinary freight rates. NOMAD 1 packs 18 assembled units into a 40’HQ container (up to 80 knock-down); NOMAD 2 ships upright, 16 to a container. Store units long-term on trickle charge, ready to deploy the day they’re needed.

What is a NOMAD solar lighting tower?

Why does the wind rating matter on a portable lighting tower?

Because an unrated tower that topples in high wind damages equipment, injures people and creates liability. How does the ballast system meet the standard?

Each NOMAD ships with an engineered ballast schedule: fill the base with locally sourced sand or ore-based fill to the prescribed density and the marked fill level, and the tower meets its AS/NZS 1170.2 rating for your wind region — no concrete footings, no engineering surprises. On redeployment the fill is emptied and returned to site, and the same schedule applies at the next location.

Do I need a crane to install a NOMAD?

NOMAD 1 and NOMAD 2 need no crane at any point — they are placed by forklift, telehandler or any loader with forks, ballasted with local fill, and hand-winched to height. How long does a NOMAD run without sun?
