Fifteen years ago, Green Frog Systems started as a small backyard venture with one belief: solar infrastructure should be engineered to perform in the real world, not just on a specification sheet.

In the first episode of Solar, Beyond the Datasheet, CEO Douglas Bolzon asks founder and CTO David Wilson to tell the story from the beginning: the rooftop solar work that led to lighting, the tender that sparked the first solar street light, and what 15 years of field experience has taught the business.

In this episode

Dave started out in rooftop solar just as two technologies were emerging at once: solar and LED lighting. When a tender came out for solar-powered street lighting, he combined the two, designed a product, and installed it himself in remote South Australia. Then he came home determined to make it quicker and easier to install.

The conversation covers why Green Frog focused only on standalone solar when most of the industry was grid-tied, the hard lessons from supply chains and coastal corrosion, and a moment at Victor Harbor that showed what reliable lighting means to a community. Dave also explains why he now sees Green Frog as an energy company as much as a lighting company.

Key takeaways

  • Built for places the grid doesn’t reach. The first installs went to communities that needed lighting for safety but had no grid connection, which shaped a focus on standalone generation and storage.
  • Field data beats datasheets. Fifteen years of getting things right and wrong, from supplier quality to paint systems that survive beachfront sites, now feeds into Green Frog designing and manufacturing its own components.
  • Reliability is a safety issue. A Victor Harbor resident credited the lights at a dark T-junction with saving her daughter from a crash, a story Dave says made the team double down on reliability.
  • Same problems, different country. The US business was set up because regional roads and remote communities there face the same lighting challenges, including Native American communities where power can be unreliable.
  • From lighting to energy. Dave’s vision is a network of small, reliable standalone energy nodes that can power cameras, sensors and warning systems as well as lights.
